Yacht Club Cool

I've been obsessed lately with Preppy Chic.  I love the bright colors and bold patterns on boys!  When Gabe brought me a bunch of jeans that had holes in the knees and asked me to make them shorts I knew what I wanted to do:
make some J Crew inspired shorts!
First I filled the bathtub with 3 inches of water.  I dumped in about 8 cups of bleach.  I'm not sure what I expected, but after an hour NOTHING had happened.  I put a pair of my jeans....
...and dumped in the rest of the bottle of bleach.  After 2 hours they were slightly lighter.  I didn't have much hope for the project.  I decided to leave it overnight.
I went to bed and when I woke up in the morning...WHITE JEANS!  Yippee!!!
I'll be honest, I was going for bright red jeans.  I used "scarlet" RIT dye and kept it in for an hour.
I also managed to dye my finger.  I guess it's good to know that your gloves have holes in them BEFORE you work with bright red dye ;-)

When the jeans came out of the wash they were this lovely coral color.  (I guess, since they're boy jeans, we'll call them "salmon".)  I cut off the bottoms and left them raw.  I wanted them to be preppy but not too girly.
I love the way they came out!  Stay tuned for a super easy tutorial for the shirt.  It was so easy and awesome I made myself one too!  Oh, and I can't wait to show you my new coral skinnies.  They are SO CUTE!

  2. I love it! Pinning this. And I swear, sometimes I take the hard way to do things. Instead of using jeans that needed bleach and cutting off, I started with (free, luckily) white men's jeans and like 3 dye baths before cutting them as fabric to make my boy some of the bright colored shorts. Then I see a tute like this and think, Duh!

  3. these are so cool Alida!!! I may need to turn some jeans white - this is awesome! And then sky is the limit for color. I would have never thought to do it for a boy - love, love, love!

  4. Awesome Alida! And I always manage to dye more than just a finger....

Have you ever tried the "color remover" that is by the dyes? I have always wondered if it works better (or faster) than bleach. Just wondering...
