Whether you're losing weight and your jeans are falling down (lucky), found some jeans at the thrift store that don't quite fit right, or bought cheap stretchy jeans that are all stretched out by the end of the day (we've all been there) there is a solution. We all have jeans in our closets that we don't wear for these reasons. So I am going to show you how I turned these ill-fitting jeans into sexy date night jeans (and it only took about an hour!)
First of all is the fit problem. These are those cheap Old Navy stretch jeans that look great right after a wash but an hour into running errands you're constantly having to pull your pants up so you don't have a muffin top. Been there?

So I got to thinking about those adjustable waist bands on kiddo clothes and thought, why can't I do that to my jeans? So I did.
I found some satin ribbon (which feels amazing against your skin) and measured from side seam to side seam of my jeans and added 4 inches. I cut the ribbon that length and finished the ends. Then I simply topstiched the ribbon to the inside waste band of the jeans along the top and bottom. (You will need to leave the sides open for the elastic.)
I then attached a button on either side of the ribbon.
I grabbed some elastic and stretched it out against the back of my hips to figure out how long I wanted it. Then I put 3 button holes in each end of the elastic. I inserted it into the ribbon and buttoned it on each side. Now you have an adjustable waist band!

Then I skinny-fied them using this how-to from Ruffles and Stuff.
Then I went on a date with my hubby and showed off my hot new jeans!

Such a good idea! I have the same kind of jeans and they do the same thing!!! I was considering getting new jeans since I have lost some of the baby weight from my last pregnancy but this is a fantastic idea!!! thank you so much!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I've done similar by just opening the bottom of the waistband on the inside of the jeans and inserting the elastic that way, it looks silly when you're not wearing the pants but you totally can't tell when they're on. I lost 30lb in 2009 and in the middle of it I needed a solution to keep pants on without buying new ones I wasn't sure would fit for long, either. Perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteYou might just be a genius! I SO have this problem!! I recently bought an elasticized belt but I like this more permanent idea better - THANKS!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I hate that about Old Navy jeans!
ReplyDeleteСпасибо!Замечательная идея!То что мне нужно!Творческих успехов Вам желаю!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I've put elastic into waistbands, but I always have to cut into the waistband to make it work. BRILLIANT idea on the satin ribbon!
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea but do you think I could do it in the back? I have the opposite problem... butt bubble. My waist is skinny and my butt is big so the waist never fits.
ReplyDeletei am pretty certain this is meant to explain that it is all done in the back of the waistband, like in a lot of toddler jeans. i have a tall, thin two year old whom i'm going to implement this tutorial for whenever she ends up with non-adjustable jeans in her closet. so helpful! thanks for posting this!
DeleteLove this idea! I need it for myself and both of my children! Thanks for sharing!!!

ReplyDeleteLosing weight and needed this idea to extend my current pants until the next size down fits better. Thank you! (PS - waste = garbage, waist = mid-section of body)
