Who doesn't love cheap maternity clothes? I know I do! Here I'm going to show you how to take a large, blah shirt and turn it into this!
To give you some idea of the challenge involved here, this is what we're working with today:Sexy, no? Well I got it on triple clearance from good ol' Target, I believe it was $3. It's a size 2x.
First you need to try on your shirt and find the bottom of your bust line. Pin there. Then cut the entire bottom of the shirt off like so:
Find a tank top that is the same type of material as your shirt (or if you don't have a tank you can take a fitted tee and fold in the sleeves). Trace around it with fabric chalk and then cut.
It will look like this:
Sew up the sides and try it on. Against my better judgement I didn't wear a tank under this for my photo, excuse my preggo belly...
There will probably be a gap by the arm pit.
Turn the shirt inside out and put it back on. Pinch the gap and pin it, then repeat for the other side.
Sew a dart into the shirt following your pins.
Remember the bottom of the shirt you cut off earlier? Grab it and gather to top. Sew it onto the top of the shirt (right sides together). It should look like this:
Getting cuter! Now we're going to make a sash. Take the sleeves and cut 3 inches down from the top of the sleeve, as far as you can. Do this for both sleeves.
Sew the two sleeves together on the short unfinished ends.
Now sew into a tube. Measure around your waist. Fold your sash in half and measure half that measurement plus a half inch. Sew down the sash here so it looks like this:
So here I decided I didn't like the looks of the unfinished arm holes. It didn't bother me until I looked at the pictures actually. So I turned them under and topstitched them closed. Aaaanywho, I added a fun fabric flower to the sash and VOILA! Cute maternity shirt!
I think this would make a cute non-maternity tunic as well. Don't you?
Make sure you go to Shabby Apple and check out their GORGEOUS maternity clothes!
Jess, I am 5'5'', and it hits me right below the bum. I have a long torso though. You could totally take the sleeves and make a ruffle at the bottom and make it a dress!
You are so talented! I'm heading to Target today to make the non-maternity version. Thanks for the inspriation! And that color looks fabulous on you, by the way. :)
oooh, so pretty!!! And it looks comfy, too! I linked to your tutorial over at Craft Gossip Sewing: http://imakestuff4fun.blogspot.com/2010/08/big-ugly-shirt-refashioned-into.html
Mands, the flower was super easy! I cut a bunch of uneven circles of 2 different colors of tee shirt fabric. I started with one about the size of a large jelly bean, and got gradually bigger until I had a circle that was about the size I wanted the flower to be. I layered them on top of each other from largest to smallest, then I hand stitched it in the very middle. I hot glued it to a piece of coordinating felt and hot glued the felt to a pin.
I completely agree that this is a cute maternity and a cute non-maternity shirt!! :) I got an oversized shirt on sale at Wal-Mart for $1 the other day, and I think this is how I will redo it! Fantastic job!! :)
Very cute, I have 2 cousins that are pregnant now so I will be making these for them. One question I may have missed it somewhere but I cannot see how you did the armholes, what did you do with the armholes once you traced and cut them out, how did you finish them off.
I just discovered your blog today through Ruffles and Stuff and have been poring over your old posts. You have done so many cute things, but HOLY COW! This one is pure genius! I love it!
This is SUCH a cute re-fashion. If I have any more babies I'm going to do this with some of my less than fabulous maternity tees from 5 years ago. Thank you for the tutorial!
Just made this- so cute! I totally botched the sash though... I think I didn't understand the instructions because I totally did them wrong. :( Going to see how it looks with a jersey sash in a different color that I already own. :)
I am preparing to make 2 of these. I am really tall, so I found my shirts in mens 2x to make sure they are long enough. paid $0.25 each :) I cant wait to wear them.
That is really great! I am going to raid my SO's closet when we get home! I think I can make a bunch of "funky" style versions of this! I can hardly wait!
What a great tutorial! I love reconstructing boring t-shirts into something fabulous like this. I like it so much, I ended up including it on my blog... http://darlingadventures.com/?p=574 Thanks!
i am trying to make the flower and its not looking as cute as yours. can you tell me how u do it.thank you so much what a cute top i have made the shirt and trying to finish... thanks so much nikki.
I'm not pregnant, but I do have a pregnant shape - I am so excited about this tutorial! Thank you so much and I will definitely be making one or more (!) of these xxx
On my 7th pregnancy, I now think I seriously need to go scouring the clearance racks at Walmart to find a shirt I can make use to make this. :) Adorable!
That is adorable! You did a great job, I'd make them in every color.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I was actually thinking about how to make it into a regular shirt as I was reading lol!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteMaggie, I am totally going to make a bunch of them...time to head back to Target!
Lynette, I think you could cut down the volume of the bottom by taking 2 or 3 inches off each side and it would make a more streamlined tunic.
Julie, thanks for your comment!
Oh, my word! that is adorable!
ReplyDeleteAlida,
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! LOVE it!! I need one! I'm totally going to feature this in a upcoming post. Thanks for sharing the link! :)
