Another Bathroom Makeover (with tutorial)

This is my bathtub window BEFORE. I guess you could say it was pretty...pretty beige!
With a little paint, a craigslist mirror and a super easy window treatment, here is the after:
To achieve this look, here is what you need to do:

Step 1: paint the bathroom a happy color. (Or in my case, get your hubby to do it!)
Step 2: troll craigslist or the thrift store for a shabby chic mirror. I found this beauty on craigslist for $45...then I talked her down to $35. See how a mirror adds so much light and dimension to a room? It's awesome!
Step 3: make an easy cheesy window treatment. This was too easy. You probably know how to make a curtain panel, and if you do then you're already half way there. I made a curtain panel large enough to cover the whole window. (To do this cheaply, you could totally use a thrifted sheet with a pretty print). Then I 'lazy pleated' the sides. Here is what I mean by 'lazy pleat':
Basically I made 4 or 5 small pleats with my fingers and shoved them under the presser foot. I recommend using a jeans needle to do this, otherwise you might break 3 needles, like I did. If you don't want to lazy pleat it you could also use a gathering stitch to gather the sides and then sew over it.
Either way once the sides are done you're finished! I used a tension rod to hang the curtain because a) they are cheap and b) I could steal it from the guest bathroom! I guess I'll have to make a Wally World run later to replace it.
I used a white ribbon as a finishing touch to gather the middle. We have an East-facing window, and therefore in the morning the light coming in that window can BLIND you. So in the morning I can undo that ribbon and voila! Almost complete window coverage!

The beautiful candle holder on the window sill came from Coastal Fog (a.k.a. the store that sells my clothes and accessories!) For a cheap alternative I came up with this:
This is a hydrangea bloom from the garden. They dry beautifully! I put it in a shot glass with some sand, for a beachy touch.

And there you have it, a bathroom makeover on a budget. If you do this please send me pictures!

  3. Very cute. I love how you said you could always use a gathering stitch, a WHAT? I am not a sewer and have no idea what that is. I own a sewing machine but really don't know how to use it. Anyone that sews anything impresses me! Thanks for stopping by my strawberry party!
